True Summer Jewelry
December 1, 2009 by Christine Scaman
Presuming that cameos and pearls have been done, though they’d be most appropriate, what does the most feminine season of all wear?
True Summer word pictures
I find True Season personalities more faithful to their Season than are Neutral Season characters, who show far more variability.
True Summer is deeply decent, sensitive, and so civilized that they put the rest of us to shame. For Summer, the word pictures are flowing, the most beautiful blues and roses, pastel, still water, hazy, graceful, precise, detailed, refined, fine, and understated.
Just as Summer’s colours are soft, so is the feeling and reflection of the jewelry. Nothing moves or changes quickly. Matching elements and pieces are in keeping with the monochromatic scheme that suits Summer best.
Multiple different styles : feels too much like a miscellaneous assortment on Summer’s soothing ambiance.
Sparkle, dazzle, and movement : excessive energy variation feels inexpensive and random.
Summer is quiet, focused, and particular. The message on their answering machine is slowly and clearly enunciated. Ask for directions, and you will be awhile listening, but you’ll get there on the first try. Ask a Spring to meet you at a certain time and you’ll be lucky to see each other the same day.
Big, heavy, chunky pieces : no (proportionate to the person wearing them) . The size of Summer’s jewelry is small. It does not insist on the spotlight. The size is intended to convey an uncommon jewel of extreme value.
Metals
The metal is certainly silver, though you could veer towards the warmer white gold if you approach the warmer Soft Summer (like Jennifer Aniston), or rose gold if your 12 Season colour analysis showed your skin tone to drift the other way, towards Light Summer (Princess Diana gave that impression). If you have a Wintery air, you can harden the metal to platinum.
Sapphire
Stones from your personal colour palette always work. Sapphire in pink or blue are perhaps the best. This brooch was custom-created, but it perfectly represents the rarity, the investment piece (as Searcy said) quality of this Season.
Diamond, fine cut
If you once thought yourself a Winter and live in the True Summer’s darker realm, as do many Summers that I see, you can integrate a Winter element. Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett gave that impression. Both dramatically weakened their impact when they chose yellow in their hair over dark ash brown and ash brown, respectively. Use diamond, but choose one that is more delicately cut. You can also use blue sapphire with diamond, but choose a piece that is exquisite and detailed, rather than heavy or bold. Summer is not an attention-seeking presence.
Tourmaline
Tourmaline is not a single mineral, but a group with similar properties. There are many perfect colour options among these stones.
For green-eyed summers, there are some uncommon options among these stones. Watermelon Tourmaline is a rare and beautiful gem.
Rose Quartz
For the lighter women in this group, rose quartz is very beautiful. It is perfect in its soft lustre and very compatible with your colour palette.
Look at the purple amethyst while you’re there.
Basics
What if you shop at Sears? Circular silver hoops are a staple. Where the classic shape of the oval defined Winter’s Jewelry, Summer’s circle is associated with childhood and grace.
These hoops are silver. I like the wavy lines. They feel flowing and smooth, but have more substance if you’d like something less delicate. Lacy filigree fulfills the criteria for Summer’s jewelry but as Searcy points out, it doesn’t always look expensive.
Opal
Opal, of course, must belong in this group, as do turquoise and aquamarine. The Shades Of Blue wire necklace feels right to me. These are made upon request by the artist, Janine Antulov. Follow the link to read her description of the creation of this piece.
It doesn’t have to feel like ultraconservative Grace-Kelly jewelry. The rules are guidelines, intended for you to add your own spin. That’s how we speak for ourselves subconsciously. Design something unique that resonates most strongly with your True Summer colouring and personality.

Hi Christine,
Thank you for the post! I was really looking forward to this. I am currently on the lookout to add some clothing pieces in my summer colors and wanted to have jewelery to match, so this really helps! I love all of the suggestions. I think my faves are the rose quartz, blue zircon and turquoise jewelery. I was going to ask if turquoise is good in any shade variation? I always assumed it to be a springy-kind of colour? I have a beaded necklace in a light “carribean-ocean blue” kind of turquoise which I constantly get compliments on, but I haven’t tried to most greenish-turquoise to see how it looks against the skin.
On a side note, some other kinds of jewelery that I’ve found looked nice with my true summer skin are pinky-lilac pearls (I have a bracelet in like this and it is beautiful with my skin). I also found that silver rings with garnet stones are pretty as well as lighter gold rings with diamond stones. I have found that light gold is ok (probably due to the bit of neutrality in my skin), but darker 14kt gold looks a bit tacky and too golden on my skin..
Jelena,
It’s always been clear that you have a huge aptitude for colour. Along with your excellent taste, I am certain that the jewelry you describe is gorgeous on you. I agree about turquoise and its greenish, springy overtones. The bluer shades work better, but in a silver setting, I still like it on Summer skin, maybe because it feels watery.
And, yes, yellow gold is really not attractive on the coolest skin. I find people often make the mistake with sunglasses/frames, especially men.

This might be a duplicate as I am not certain I hit the submit button about two days ago after composing an email regarding cameos. I was inquiring what the “connection” is for Summers and cameos. All the books and color consultants mention cameos and pearls for summers. I can see how the iridescent quality and pink or soft white and grey pearls have an affinity for Summers but am not grasping the cameo effect. Most cameos are mounted in gold tones and have that orange tone though I have seen some in the Wedgwood blue and silver tone. Thank you for sharing your observations.
Great observations, Cathy. I agree with you completely. On younger women especially, I don’t see the cameo in its customary form.
Still, there is something about the cameo that associates feelings of composure, grace, femininity, and decorum. They’re like the ultimate etiquette. I wonder if this is more of a historical relationship than one that applies today, but the mood that’s evoked is certainly that of True Summer for me – but perhaps, as I think of it, even more so Soft Summer for exactly the reasons you describe.

Have been thinking more on the cameo affinity and think I possibly have zeroed in on it. Usually the carving is very delicate, elaborate, and does have that gracefulness. Some coins also show this with a lady wearing very graceful garments. Cameos really are classic (timeless). I am really enjoying your blog about color analysis.
Ya, I think that’s it, Cathy. Any kind of very finely wrought handiwork has a Summer feeling.

Hello Christine,
I absolutely love what you are doing on the Internet!
I’ve been very curious about what season I’d turn out to be so earlier today I did a “mini” color analysis on myself. Didn’t go very well until I took my glasses off (wrong color… *sigh*) and photographed myself in snow-reflected daylight (good day to do this, the sun was up). Every time I look at true summer colors I remember a pink sweater I used to have in preschool. Not my thing, I still have the picture and my face clearly gets red-pink areas (my face is only slightly pink). So today I tried specifically for soft summer and light summer. I expected soft summer. I was wrooooooooong… my boyfriend is NOT EVER going to get his t-shirt back, doesn’t matter that it’s way too big for me. He won’t miss it much though; black and white brings glow and health to his otherwise sallow face.
I am very pleased with today’s mindblow, now that I’m over the (first) shock. My face doesn’t normally look alive, or CRISP, and I hadn’t dreamed of my freckles looking that nice or my eyes being bright (my eyes – bright??). Another thing I found out is that the colors I wear most of the time makes the purple under my eyes really show, it’s more than just a bit saddening to be honest. So now I want to explore this completely new, sympathetic (!) me and I’m hoping that you can give some hints and tips about light summer jewelry, make up, clothes and so on. What this season is all about – other than what you’ve already written, of course. I don’t really wear jewelry or make up, but would like to. I have the right foundation and a very nice blush, that’s about it. Jewelry-wise it’s a silver bracelet that my mother made for me.
Also: there isn’t any Sci/Art PCA in Sweden. Unfortunately.
Thank you for being so reassuringly no-nonsense.
Thank you, Zandra,
No nonsense can seem too absolute at times, but trying to please and include everyone does nobody any service. I will work away at Light Summer. My time is (sadly) so limited. And yet writing about colour is one of the aspects of all this that flows most easily. If you don’t belong to the Fb Fan Club, it may be useful. I can put several short posts a day there, but planning a blog article takes more time.

In my opinion a person would have to make relevant comparisons to be truly no-nonsense, most absolute claims are quite nonsensical when put to trial. I hope that made sense… =)
The only reason why I’m not a fb fan is that I’m not a fb member. But… that has’nt stopped me from reading everything you’ve written so far. I’d love seeing short posts from you.
I read somewhere about a painter holding a course for students and asking them each to paint a picture using only colors that suited them personally. From that he could later tell which student painted which picture. That lead me to the realization that my picture would have remained unpainted. And now it seems that I’m somewhat of a popsicle?! I’ll have to explore this further, but still… I’m amazed. I had no idea those colors even existed! Since I couldn’t wear any other season’s colors, looked too white in pastels, too pink in medium “summer” colors and kept getting the “you’re-warm-colored-advice”… I’d gotten quite used to my whole head being invisible-ish. But when I saw the improvement from cutting the brown hair off (I’m an original ash blonde) a couple of weeks ago and now find that lively light summer colors might suite ME the best of all? Wow!! I could not have figured this out without your texts on the web. For example my eyes would have placed me as a soft summer, they look muddy in everything but this. So does my hair actually, that’s why I’ve tried almost every shade of hair color there is (except for blacks) for the last seven years. Sorry, I’m rambling a bit, but REALLY – WOW. I’m so happy right now, I would excel at getting evicted over howling an interpretation of “love is in the air”, LOL
On the subject that is: I’d love seeing short posts from you on the subject. Sorry.
