Thanks for bumping up this old article that had got so deeply buried that I missed it. I love this sort of article because a picture is worth a thousand words (love that True Autumn bag! as a bolder SA I think I could carry it off, no pun intended) Great posts by Nynd and Christine on the whole concept of what PCA should do for us.

Nynd, I agree with so many of your points. I feel the pressure to conform to beauty standards that are set out in books, magazines, and television, but I truly believe at the end
of the day, so much comes down to personality. As a Winter, I am the perfect canvas for color, yet as I get older I find myself more drawn to neutrals and very rich tones. To my eye they read as more sophisticated and the hallmark of women with an easy and effortless style. This is not necessarily true, but just my perception / aesthetic. I thrived on bright color in my teens and 20s, but just find it too loud for me now. I just don't see myself going for those tones even though they feature predominantly in my palette. I'm still trying to find a way to meld my palette with my personality/preferences.....a work in progress I suppose :)

It's never about rules, Leanne. It's about guidelines to avoid buying something that makes you look worse, but ultimately, the point is to mesh your personal expression with looking more beautiful. No two women will interpret their Season the same way.

Leanne, I think some of us are just bone-deep predisposed to be more comfortable with a more neutral, more masculine palette. I'm a newly-minted soft summer, here, who's happy with her "new" palette generally (it goes surprisingly dark, and a lot of it consists of old friends), but I will probably never have much to do with any but the deepest and most wine-dark of my pink swatches. And there's no ruling to the effect that I must.

Maybe the men's swatches might be more your style? (Though as I understand it, these are really just extrapolated from the women's ones -just darker, which I think we can work out?)

There IS a culturally-sanctioned school of thought to the effect that we "should" lighten up, wear more colour, and generally adopt something closer to a 'feminine' spectrum, but personality matters, too, as do factors such as workplace peer perception (for folks in corporate environments, where there often IS a subtext of colour association) - and I'm just a bit too saturnine by nature for some of "my colours". (Also, too, as taller women we are going to struggle with choices anyway - off the peg suits? Ain't happening in my world ... )

That True Spring bag - WELL! *Maybe* I'd carry it...if I were ninety! But I'm six feet tall, and sporty-looking, and the last thing I'd be caught dead carrying, out of all the selection is the choice for true spring :-(

Sorry to be blunt, but no wonder we Springs have it so hard, wearing / using our colours...I mean, I just don't want to look like a granny just yet, or a 5 year old Disney Princess wannabee.

I guess that's where colour analysis falls down. I might *suit* bag 1, colouring-wise, but I'd *buy* the true autumn bag. And it would probably work just fine.

Thanks Christine, interesting! I think you're talking about intuition perhaps? If so, I am a firm believer in that, every time I go aganist that feeling, things have a habit for me of just not working out so well. And why do I go againist it? Probably not always brave enough at times to go with the flow first time, not trusting to something which I can't logically explain to anyone, least of all myself. I have been looking for something cognac leather and rejected several, why? They just didn't feel right, solid and sturdy, but a tendancy to be a little too sensible as well? I have had a tan coloured one for summer, but felt it was a bit too light and bright, and a black for winter, but just feels too heavy and dense somehow, a bit dead. Maybe your suggested bag is the answer or something like it; I see what you mean about that contrast against all the dark shades too. Although not going to look right with my black coat, which I have to wear for another winter, can't justify a new one this winter unfortunately!

Hi, Trisha,

Well, it was the last one I did so I was getting into the fun of doing that post. I really enjoyed it, just went shopping and allowed first impressions to flow. The expected bag, what I thought I was looking for, was a cognac leather briefcase type, and it would have worked well. But the Seasons all are misconceived in some way and I like trying to widen the frame, if I can. To get to the edge of your look without falling over, as it were, like in yoga and finding the edge of each movement.

This bag just spoke to me of productivity (Autumn) and drama (Winter), of strength (A) and elegance (W), of expensive (W) in a Chanel-Vuitton way. Some might see it as better for another Season but its solid, weighted look would seem to move it towards Autumn or Winter. Dark Winter could certainly do this, though the texture of the light part is more A than W's more polished feel.

I do it all on feelings at this point. I've learned the pitch of the note in my head that says "feels right". I'm making less and less sense, I know that. If my kids read this, their eyes would be rolling and they'd be making celestial choir sounds to indicate that I've gone too far.
Trisha, it's just my taste really. I see every Dark Autumn I've known carrying this and providing a light spot in an otherwise often dark outfit. The eye has somewhere to rest? Maybe a little piece of negative space?

Christine,
I would be fascinated to know the rational behind your choice for Deep Autumn; love it, but would have expected something deeper. Please tell, would love to understand, and make use of that explanation!
